- "Los de Abajo," Mariano Azuela, a novel of the 1910 Mexican revolution. Gritty reality.
- "Palacio Quemado," by Edmundo Paz Soldán, fictional treatment of Bolivia´s gas war of 2002-03
- Two books on China by Peter Hessler, "Oracle Bones" and "Country Driving," both excellent.
- Lord Jim, Joseph Conrad´s novel about guilt and redemption. A masterpiece.
- The movie Juno. Screenwriter Diablo Cody has a pitch perfect ear for teenage speech.
- Remarkable Creatures, a novel by Tracy Chevalier, geology and intrigue in 19th century England. Fossil plesiosaurs and ichthyosaurs.
- Avatar, the movie, seen in 3-D. Great visual effects, simple story.
- Here Comes Everybody, Clay Shirky´s excellent analysis of the growing power of social networks in politics, business and society.
- Up in the Air, the George Clooney movie about corporate America. Four stars.
- What is the What, by Dave Eggers. Story of one of the lost boys of Sudan. Scary, well written.
- Hero of Hispaniola: America's First Black Diplomat, Ebenezer D. Bassett, by Christopher Teal. A friend at the consulate is the author. Good story, well told.
- "The Course of Mexican History," a valuable survey that´s used as a college text.
- Jon Lee Anderson, "El dictador, los demonios y otras crónicas", excellent collection of articles by this American journalist. Profiles of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Augusto Pinochet, Hugo Chavez and a narco leader of Brazil.
- Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer; human nature hasn´t changed in 600 years
- Cien Años de Soledad, Gabriel García Márquez; reading it in Spanish, slowly
